This series of photographs are from the photographic archives of the United States Congress. These images were taken between 1840 and 1930 and the original format consists of wet collodion negative plates. All the photographs are manipulated by me, so that on the basis of one image I create a new image with a different meaning from the original. It is a work of selection and re-signification that includes both the idea of giving a new life to the images and of questioning the nature of the images themselves. The observer of these images who is unaware of their origin and nature will think that they are original and will ignore the manipulation they have undergone. The status of the images and their relationship to the original photographed is thus questioned.
Esta serie de fotografías provienen del archivo fotográfico del Congreso de los Estados Unidos de Norteamérica. Son imágenes tomadas entre los años 1840 y 1930 y el formato original consiste en placas de negativo en colodión húmedo. Todas las fotografías están manipuladas por mí, de tal forma que sobre la base de una imagen construyo una nueva imagen con un significado diferente del original. Es un trabajo de selección y resignificación que comprende tanto la idea de dar una nueva vida a las imágenes como de cuestionarme la naturaleza de las mismas. El observador de estas imágenes que desconozca el origen y naturaleza de las mismas, pensará que estas son originales e ignorará la manipulación que han experimentado. Queda así cuestionado el estatus de las imágenes y su relación con el original fotografiado.
